Alrighty then. In this page I’m going to explain how I magically installed my 200 gigabyte (w00t!!!!!) ATA hard drive.
First of all, turn your computer off (a dur) and remove the power supply cord from the back (unless it’s not in the back). Then press the power button on your computer to ground it. You might also want some sort of anti-static cable like the one shown below.
Alright. Open the computer by doing whatever method you need to do. Now if your computer is anything like mine, your hard drives will be contained in these annoying cases vertically.
Here’s my sexy computer.
Notice the vertical hard drives on the right. If you don’t know which ones are the hard drives, you really shouldn’t be here.
Alright. We need to get rid of that casing, or shell as I like to call it.
Let’s unscrew that now. Be careful not to disturb anything on the motherboard.
I might want to get the cables out of the way before I go any further…
The cables I just removed were the power cables, in case you cared.
Now let’s remove the IDE cables.
Now, do NOT be afraid to get a little rough. Don’t go easy on your computer, unless you want the process to take all day, of course.
Yes, my jumpers are Master and Cable Select. Long story. It works, though. (Long story short: Computer problems, panic, tried to boot from CD (this was before my nerdiness exploded, so I didn’t know how to configure boot device order, etc), failed, tried to boot from other hard drive, solution was stupidly simple (the login thingy wouldn’t appear, ctrl-alt-del for like 2 seconds bring the dialog up. Poof)
Alright. Now back to getting the drive out of the shell. In the pic above, the drive on the left is the drive I am replacing, again, in case you cared.
Now that multicolored cable might get in your way. As with most everything else, don’t go too easy on it, but don’t kill it for god’s sake. If it pops out, just pop it back in. But if it gets ruined, I’m sure you can find a replacement easily. It’s just the cable to let the computer know you pressed the power button, thus turning it on.
Now I shall remove the drive. I think I deleted the picture (because it was blurry), but there are little tabs (that you can kinda see) that go into these slots. That’s what makes these shells a bitch to get rid of, especially that damn power cable. You should be able to figure it out, though.
And now I have the drive out of it’s shell.
Now to get the new hard drive out of it’s box!
DIE DIE DIE!!!!!!
And then I notice the “cut here motherfucker” symbol. I cut there. Much easier.
There. It’s tearing nicely.
There. The fucker is opened.
There it is. It’s a whole lot heavier than my old one.
The plastic is off! Muahahaha. Now we need to set the jumper.
That little white plastic thing? That’s the jumper. Right now it’s all good to go, it’s on Cable Select. But it might be different in your case.
See, there’s Master, Slave, and Cable Select. Master is the drive that your computer boots from by default. Slave is one that you throw extra shit on, maybe a secondary operating system lies on it, such as Linux. Cable Select lets the IDE cable decide which to boot from.
Alright. To put the drive into the shell, you have to line up these little pegs with the screws. It might be a little tricky, but just fiddle around with it and you’ll get it. If worse comes to worse just cut the pegs off and use the avaliable screw slot to just use a screw.
Now the drive is is in it’s resting place. Now to hook it up!
Putting it back in…
And SHIT! I turn the computer back on. BIOS error. So I decide to actually read the instruction manual/
Ah ha! It says here: “IMPORTANT! To hook up your Western Digital Hard Drive, you MUST use the 40-pin, 80-conductor EIDE cable included in this kit.” I think “BITCH. Now I have to replace the fucking cable after I shoved everything back in there….. awww BITCH.” Those were my exact words. Well I don’t know about EXACT, but I said “awww BITCH” a few (hundred) times. So I wrestle the IDE cable out of the motherboard, which is tricky. I didn’t have a very good grip, and I didn’t want to get too violent, but it eventually came out. I noticed a difference between the two cables.
This is the one I yanked out. Notice how this one is normal, 39 pins. (The pins are in the square holes.)
And here’s the one I replaced it with. No plugged holes here. 40 pins. Funny how one stupid pin can make such a difference! Of course, there’s probably some other technology besides having one more pin. In this picture you can actually see the pins in the holes. Now to just plug this bitch in.
Anyways, this is the cable I had to yank out. You can see the word “SYS” on it.
There. Now it’s out.
The cable is in! When I started up the computer this time, it still screamed at with an error. But I just checked the connections, and I then realized that the cable could go in even further into the slot on the motherboard. I turned the computer back on, crossed my fingers, and w00t! Windows started to boot.
Yay! Now I could put everything back.
Gotta love the octopus TY beanie that sits on my speaker. And the dinosaur plush. Not to mention the Poke’mon Entei figure. And my extremely dirty mousepad. But yeah! The Western Digital drive tools were formatting my drive, it’s all good.
I hope this helped at least a little bit. It probably didn’t, but you know, I really don’t care. Fuck you.
